I am having trouble getting this widget to load cleanly.

On Chrome and Safari, it takes a while to load, but then if you just reload the page it loads fine.

On Firefox, it does not load at all.

All of my images are loading from an AWS S3 container. Is it better to serve those files from something else?

Rick, to be honest, I don't use that service and am not an expert on it.
I find that either Hosting my images on Drop box or on my own pages within my site works best for me.
As a side note, if you use Drop Box, there is a change to an old process to allow all browsers to show images (Safari seems to have made some recent changes to their permissions which created a need for this quick tip).
See the 6 minute mark of this video and the following will make sense https://visualarms.wistia.com/medias/0jrav2zavl
It is necessary to change the last bit of info in the Drop Box key to raw=1 (they used to end in dl=0).
The video has some different info about hosting images.
    Hope this helps
